Abstract

My comic aims to show how students in Puerto Rico fought against two areas of colonialism – war drafts and cultural erasure. It represents students fighting for causes that affected the entire island - both small but strongly meaningful acts like hoisting a flag and larger acts like constant protests against the ROTC presence on university campuses. University students fueled their anger towards a colonial government that repressed voice and identity. As someone who lives and was raised in Puerto Rico, representing these events is deeply important to me. To avoid erasure, we must know history. Colonialism is not just in the past.
