- Abstract:
-
The shoreline inventory files have been generated to support the application of the Living Shoreline Suitability Model (LSSM), developed by the Center for Coastal Resources Management (CCRM), Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS), to enhance and streamline regulatory decision making in Maryland. This shoreline inventory includes the features needed as inputs to run the LSSM. The data developed for the Shoreline Inventory is based on a three-tiered shoreline assessment approach. This assessment characterizes conditions by using observations made remotely at the desktop using high resolution imagery (MD Six Inch Imagery 2016/2017) . The three-tiered shoreline assessment approach divides the shorezone into three regions: 1) the immediate riparian zone, evaluated for land use; 2) the bank, evaluated for height, and natural protection (i.e., marshes and beaches); and 3) the shoreline, describing the presence of shoreline structures for shore protection and recreational purposes.
- Purpose: To inventory Maryland's tidal shoreline conditions.

All processing steps for the shoreline inventory were generated using ArcGIS - ArcMap v10.6.1 while viewing conditions observed on MD_SixInchImagery and Google Earth Pro (checking dates from 1994 to 2021). For the land use/bank cover shapefile, arcs were split and coded for land use, bank height, and tree fringe. For the access structure shapefile, points were placed where structures (dock, dilapidated dock, boathouse, public ramp, and private ramp) are located on the shoreline. For the shoreline structure shapefile, arcs were coded for bulkhead, delapidated bulkhead, riprap, unconventional, debris, wharf, breakwater, groinfield, jetty, marsh toe revetment, and marina >50 slips and <50 slips.

Beaches are persistent sandy shores that are visible during high tides. These features can be wide or thin lenses of sand. Beaches are coded as linear features at the wet/dry line to portray their location only. If a beach does not have a visible wet/dry line, then the line feature is located at the seaward edge of the beach. ‘Wide’ beaches have at least 10 feet of dry sand persistently visible above high tides. Beach features coded along tidal marsh shorelines are persistent, sandy features located on the water side of tidal marsh vegetation. Sand washed into tidal marshes is not coded as a beach if the marsh vegetation &/or marsh edge is still clearly visible. This classification of beaches along tidal marsh shorelines can include professional judgment.

- Attribute_Label: Spit
- Attribute_Definition:
-
A narrow coastal landform tied to the upland shoreline at one end resulting from the deposition of sand moved by tides and currents. Spit features are generally sandy and may be dominated by beach, dune, and/or marsh habitats. For inventory purposes, this definition does not include spit features that are developed or have developable upland.

- Attribute_Definition:
-
Bank height is a visual inspection of the height of the bank from the base to the top. We estimate height from imagery and lidar. Bank height is labelled one of the following: 0-5 feet, 5-30 feet, and >30 feet.

Feature refers to a combination of land use in the immediate riparian area within 100 feet of the adjacent shoreline and best professional judgement when the infrastructure is setback on the parcel. Current land use: commercial, industrial, paved, government/military and marsh island.

A marsh island is a vegetated wetland that is completely isolated from the mainland and found in open water. A marsh that is surrounded by water due to dissection from small tidal creeks was classifies as marsh, not marsh island.

- Attribute_Definition:
-
When the dominant riparian land use is not forested, but a line of trees is maintained along the bank edge, the land use is noted to include a tree fringe. When the tree fringe is between 100 and 500 feet, it is considered a wide tree fringe. When the tree fringe is greater than 500 feet, it would be labled "forested" in land use.
