Three-dimensional strain analysis of the Antietam Formation in the western Blue Ridge, Virginia

Godschalk, David R.
Abstract
The Antietam Formation is an early Cambrian quartz arenite. Outcrops of the Antietam Formation occur on the western limb of the Blue Ridge anticlinorium, a regional-scale structure which consists of Mesoproterozoic basement thrust sheets overlain by Neoproterozoic sedimentary units. Folds which comprise the anticlinorium lay from the northeast to the southwest. Rocks along the western limb of these folds, such as the Antietam Formation, have experienced internal deformation. This is in contrast to the regional deformation which shaped the area. The goal of this project is to determine if the deformation which created the anticlinorium, related to the Alleghanian Orogeny, also deformed the Antietam Formation on a micro-scale. This question is answered with a two and three-dimensional strain analysis study of 13 samples of the Antietam Formation. Preliminary results suggest that the Alleghanian Orogeny did in fact deform the Antietam Formation on a micro-scale. Further work, however, must be completed to lend credence to this statement.
