Analog Modelling of Structural Defomation

Abstract
Movement of the earth’s crust creates the landscape of the Earth’s surface both visible and hidden to the human eye. In order to study both processes on a scaled, real-time level, analog models are used to replicate physical processes. The William and Mary structural deformation analog model attempts to accurately simulate a relevant and significant model of a structural geologic process initiated by extensional force. I will be analyzing results of the influence of varying width and depth parameters on a chosen polystyrene material when an extensional force is provided. Initial expectations are that all parameters will have an influence on the resulting steepness of the formed half-graben.
