Geochemical Constraints on the Nature and Tectonic Setting of Metavolcanic Rocks in the Roanoke Rapids Terrane, Eastern Piedmont, Virginia

Abstract
The main purpose of this study was to provide a general reconnaissance of the metavolcanic rocks of the Roanoke Rapids terrane (RRT) of the southern Piedmont of Virginia, including protolith type and likely tectonic setting. In addition, the rocks were briefly compared to those of the Carolina terrane to the west, a group of rocks thought to be similar in nature to those of the RRT. Accomplished using a data set provided by Rick Berquist and a few sample collected in the field, several diagrams and classification schemes were used to show that the rocks of the terrane were mainly quartz keratophyric in nature with some intermediate and basaltic composition, and they likely originated in a volcanic arc setting.
