Factors affecting sedimentation patterns of a tidal salt marsh in Plum Island Sound Estuary, Massachusetts

Abstract
Tidal salt marshes are morphologically dynamic and rapidly evolve in response to environmental stresses such as changes in sediment supply. The TIDE Project will alter the natural conditions in Plum Island Sound tidal marshes in northeastern Massachusetts. In order to understand the effects that study will have on the marsh system, this study investigated the natural mechanisms at work in the study area by documenting sedimentation during July and August 2003 with respect to the tidal creek source concentration, elevation/duration of inundation, and distance from sediment sources within tidal creeks. The most influential control during this time appeared to be source c on centration. However, there remain questions about where the sediment originated as well as how the pathway by which the marsh floods due to the presence of mosquito ditches.
