Abstract
As a result of their many desirable material properties, clay minerals are used in many applications. These applications include use in manufacturing, construction, cosmetics and drilling. A large problem that operators encounter while drilling stems from the capability of clay minerals to expand in the presence of water; this problem can be mitigated by the use of drilling fluids. Our goal was to test the ability of various salts to inhibit swelling. With increasing salinity, there was a decrease in swelling height. Additionally, KC] acted as our most efficient swelling inhibitor.
