'The Winter's Tale:' Liminality and Communitas in Analysis and Performance

Abstract
In my thesis, I analyze Shakespeare's "The Winter's Tale" using the works of Victor Turner and Mikhail Bakhtin, searching the text for liminality, carnival, and communitas. The thesis accounts for a production of the play that I directed in Fall 2012, in which we sought to create liminal theatrical experiences for the audience, bringing them into a state of communitas. The extension of agency and community to the audience parallels the play's "opening," which occurs in the second half in its pastoral scenes.
