A Reconnaissance and Petrogrpahic Investigation of Graitoids in the Eastern Slate Belt of Virginia

Solomon, Andrew
Abstract
It remains unclear if the “southern plutons” are Alleghanian in age and therefore of the same origin as the Petersburg granites. Petrology and mineralogy analysis of the “southern plutons” with the Petersburg granite shows that several of the southern plutons are similar to the Petersburg granite. One or more of the southern plutons may be related to Eastern Slate Belt volcanic rocks. Two major differences between the Petersburg granite and the southern plutons is the presence of amphibole in several of the plutons and the fact that one of the southern plutons plots as a tonalite. However, there are rare examples of Alleghanian granitoids that do resemble the southern pluton granitoids. The granitoids of the Rocky Mount, NC complex are one such example.
