Abstract
Since the 1980s, the Virginia Coastal Plain has not been mapped solely on lithologic criteria but has also relied on morphologic relationships. The difference between the Bacons Castle and nearshore facies of the Yorktown Formations in the Richmond area has needed confirmation. This project uses statistical comparisons of the clast composition and clast maximum diameter to determine differences and similarities between sediments of the two formations. The two formations are, in fact, statistically different overall, but upon closer inspection, comparisons of vein quartz and quartzite show that the formations are similar to each other and different between themselves. These similarities and differences could have a number of explanations. A few are explored, but more work would be necessary to come to any accurate conclusions.
