Abstract
The Italian Feminist movement has long been considered through a comparative lens in the grand scheme of Western feminist narratives. When it comes to the Italian conceptualization of abortion, freedom, and autonomy, however, Italy presents a unique theoretical tool that focuses on an individualistic understanding of gender and identity. This tool, which I will coin as libertà, is transformational to our understanding of feminism and grants the Italian feminist movement a distinct space in the long span of Western feminisms and in feminist scholarship as a whole.
