Abstract
Sampling for oysters and clams conducted in June of 1979 indicated that oysters were present in several places in densities which would support commercial harvest. It is noted, however, that the.area is presently classed as condemned by the Virginia Department of Health. Hard clams and soft clams were present in very low numbers. Quantities of oysters recovered in 1979 were often several times larger than those observed when the same areas were sampled. in 1974, before construction of the bridge. Natural recruitment is indicated as the source of the increased quantities. On the basis of our data, there are no indications of any adverse impact from the bridge construction could be inferred. Values of oysters and shell on the leases in June of 1979 have been estimated.
