The Geology of the Southeastern Part of the Columbia 7.5' Quadrangle

DuBose, John
Abstract
We report new field relations for the rock units of southeastern Fluvanna County. For nearly a decade workers have debated the relationship of granitoids in the region. Previous research in the area had grouped the granitoids of southeastern Fluvanna County as one single unit and alternately, as two separate plutons. Our mapping reveals that the granitoids in southeastern Fluvanna County form one continuous body. In addition to determining the relations of the granitoids in the region our fieldwork produced a detailed geologic map at 1:24,000 scale of the southeastern portion of the Columbia 7.5' quadrangle. Existing maps of the region are either 30 or more years old or at scales of 1:62,500 or smaller. Our mapping revealed large unmapped bodies of Chopawamsic metavolcanics in the interior of the Columbia pluton as well as inconsistencies in previous maps and our field observations. Our preliminary mapping of the Columbia/Quantico Synform revealed that the previously mapped fold axis is in the incorrect location. Additionally, outcrop patterns in the synform do not agree with existing maps. We believe the Columbia/Quantico Synform warrants more detailed mapping and structural analysis in order to reinterpret the structure.
