Abstract
This thesis uses data from various cemeteries in the United States to evaluate the expression of a German collective identity among German-American Catholics in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The importance of specific geographical and historical contexts in the construction and development of this collective identity through time is emphasized. Cemeteries in Baltimore, Maryland; Richmond, Virginia; Gettysburg, Pennsylvania; and Orrtanna, Pennsylvania are examined.
