The Neoproterozoiv-Phanerozoic transition in the Western Blue Ridge Province, Southern Shenandoah National Park, Virginia

Abstract
The Blue Ridge province in central Virginia provides a window into the Neoproterozic to Phanerozoic boundary. Understanding the exact timing and nature of this boundary will provide insight into the tectonic evolution that occurred during this time period specifically, the rifting of the Laurentian continent and the evolving Iapetus Ocean. The Weverton, Loudoun, and Catoctin Formations contact relationships are key to understanding the Neoproterozoic to Cambrian boundary. This investigation found that the Loudoun Formation in Shenandoah National Park most closely resembles volcanogenic tuff origins. Field mapping, stratigraphic section and cross section construction support the contact relations between the Weverton and Catoctin is an erosional unconformity.
