Using sedimentary and lithologic analysis to examine the provenance and depositional processes of alluvial fans in the Farmville Basin

Willis, David Denton Hull
Abstract
The Farmville Basin located north of Farmville, Virginia includes three major geologic units. These are the western alluvial fan, north-eastern alluvial fan, and central to south-eastern lacustrine and fluvial units. I propose that the north-eastern alluvial fan be separated into two distinct, though likely interacting fans. The most northern of which was deposited by sheet-flood mechanisms, likely due to lower relief. This conclusion was reached by comparing multiple sedimentary features of each fan, which indicate that the northernmost fan is distinct from the other fans. I have also constrained the likely watershed supplying sediments to the basin to be within 2 to 3 miles of the basin fault scarp, and have determined which currently exposed lithologies likely supplied sediment to the basin.
