The Influence of Bedrock Lithology on Sand Composition in the James River Watershed, Virginia Piedmont

Abstract
A portion of the James River watershed flowing eastward from Scottsville, VA to Richmond includes many tributaries and varying bedrock lithology. I have studied sand compositions of four tributaries and five additional locations along the James River noting general mineral composition along with statistical significances of differences between locations. In order to determine composition samples were analyzed by point counting 300 grains per thin section. Sands ranged from quartzolithic to quartzofeldspathic and most tributary sands reflected similar mineralogy to underlying bedrock.
