Sediment Analysis of Calcite Precipitation in Lake Matoaka: A Southeastern Virginia Hypereutrophic Water Body

Abstract
Ionic variability between the feeder streams and spillway of Lake Matoaka have led to some interesting questions as to what processes are occurring. Calcium ions are very prevalent as they are leached away from fossils in the surrounding geologic formations and the lake itself is a carbon rich sink. By coring into the lake bed and analyzing the sediment layers, it is possible to correlate calcite precipitation with ionic differences as well as establishing a time frame of lake eutrophication. The goal of this project was to provide a possible solution to explain differences in ionic concentration, build upon previous research performed on Lake Matoaka, and provide a platform for future research projects.
