"Qui me rendra présent?": Francophone Representations of Lebanese Civil War Memory

Naanou, Paul
Abstract
This thesis considers a variety of francophone Lebanese texts and the ways in which they construct memories of the Lebanese Civil War. By analyzing a collection of poetry (Nadia Tuéni’s Archives Sentimentales d’une guerre au Liban), a graphic novel (Kamal Hakim’s Le temps des grenades), a film (Dennis Villeneuve’s Incendies), and a novel (Hyam Yared’s Tout est halluciné), I endeavor to highlight how impactful the memory of Lebanon’s civil war was on all of its groups (religious, ethnic, social, linguistic, etc.) and by calling attention to the multiplicity of platforms through which memory is voiced, I aim to paint the construction of war memory as both an ongoing and complex process. Furthermore, although memory cultures inform the production of these texts, I demonstrate that cultural products ultimately inscribe the limitations of representing memory and thus, inform and transform future proposals for memory portrayal.
