The Voter’s Dilemma: Measuring Political Cognitive Dissonance withthe Political Cognitive Dissonance Inventory

Al Saffar, Muhammed
Abstract
Political choices often pit ideological identity against self-interest. This study examined howideological alignment and personal outcome valence jointly shape cognitive dissonance whenindividuals make political choices. We used a brief Political Cognitive Dissonance Inventory (PCDI)to quantify momentary cognitive dissonance, operationalized as emotional difficulty, felt conflict, perceived fairness, difficulty agreeing, difficulty complying, and difficulty publicly supporting, immediately after each forced policy choice in a 2 × 2 within- subjects design crossingideological alignment (aligned vs. conflicting) with outcome valence (positive vs. negative). ThePCDI showed excellent internal consistency and unidimensionality (α = .95; single componentexplaining ~79% of variance). Among undergraduates (N = 99), political dilemmas producedhigher dissonance than non-political control dilemmas. Linear mixed-effects models showedsignificant effects of ideological alignment and outcome valence and a significant Alignment ×Valence interaction; conflicting and negative-outcome choices increased dissonance, withAligned-Positive lowest and Conflicting-Negative highest. Behaviorally, participants choseideologically aligned options more often than conflicting options and positive outcomes morethan negative outcomes; choice frequencies across the four conditions showed that Aligned-Positive was the most frequent and Conflicting-Negative the least frequent. Exploratorily, theAlignment × Valence pattern was moderated by respondents’ ideology. Qualitative responsesrevealed rationalization strategies and themes through which participants balanced identity andoutcomes. Overall, findings support a dual-driver model in which ideological alignment andoutcome valence jointly shape both dissonance and choice.
