Diversity between Heavy Mineral Suites in the York and James Rivers, Virginia: Local Anomaly or Persistent Trend?

Abstract
In September 2000 a difference was found in the heavy mineral suites along the York and James Rivers, VA. This objective of this study was to investigate this anomaly. Samples were collected at three localities along each river. These samples were then separated into a magnetic @ 1.7 amps, magnetic @ .03 amps, magnetite, and non-magnetic fraction using a hand magnet and the Frantz isodynamic magnetic separator. After comparison of the weight percents of each fraction and statistical analysis it was found that the original difference persists upstream, specifically the magnetite and magnetic @ 1.7 amps fractions are statistically different. This difference may be accounted for by considering the difference in source sediment or difference in drainage basins of the two rivers. However, further investigation is needed to attain a definitive answer to why this difference in heavy mineral suites exists.
