Seasonal and Spatial Variability in the Sedimentology of the Merrimack Embayment

Marino, George B.
Abstract
This study examines sedimentological trends across the Merrimack Embayment and associated barrier island system in northeastern Massachusetts. Samples collected in 2014-15 across the embayment were analyzed to produce grain size distributions and statistical parameters, which were compared on spatial and short-term temporal scales to observe how sediment is reworked after it is deposited on the barrier beaches. Evidence is given to support existing hypotheses of storm-driven sediment transport and a southerly-fining trend away from the Merrimack River inlet. This study adds to the wealth of data on Plum Island, as a high-resolution spatial and temporal database of sedimentological trends.
