Animating Animals: Exploring Modes of Animal Representation in Classic Animated Children’s Films

Abstract
This paper explores the intersection of film studies and critical animal studies in its examination of nonhuman animals in animated children's films. It examines various modes of representation of nonhuman animals and questions which representations generate empathy from the audience. It also considers the impact of anthropomorphism in the medium of animation.
