Abstract
In this study a review of two different quarries was conducted. The Caroline Stone Quarry and the Doswell Quarry, both located in Virginia, were the sites of faulting in the Cenozoic era. The purpose of this study was threefold. First, to compare both fracture and fault geometries at the Doswell and the Caroline Stone quarries. Second, to understand the kinematics of the fracturing that occurred in both places. Finally, to determine the relative timing of this faulting to see which would have occurred first. In order to fulfill this purpose, there was stratigraphic analysis of slickenlines and drill core data analysis. The drill core data analysis came from coring with Rick Berquist as part of a 2014 Field Methods class. From the data collected the following observations were made: there were both a normal and reverse fault located in Caroline Stone Quarry, and in the Doswell Quarry there were sets of oblique normal faults. This was significant because it showed that faulting occurred in the same area but did not necessarily follow the same faulting patterns.
