Abstract
During his time as superintendent of Eastern State Hospital, John Minson Galt II researched and implemented many progressive ideas about the understanding and treatment of the mental illness as well as related conditions. His study led him to an interest in idiocy, a general term used to describe what is now understand as cognitive or developmental disabilities. In 1859, he published a Lecture on Idiocy that reveals his own personality, the antebellum Virginia climate towards those with mental difference, and the advancements being made domestically and internationally in the understanding and treatment of cognitive disability.
