From a Land in the West: An Examination of the Possibility of Persian Influence on the Tibetan Bon Religion

McMahan, Jeremy Ronald
Abstract
This paper examines the claim that Tibet's Bon religion came from Persia. By looking at traditional and scholarly approaches to the history of Bon, I looked for evidence of Persian influence. I also compared certain aspects Zoroastrianism and other Persian religions to both Tibet's ancient religion as well as the Bon religion of today. From this study, I conclude that there is no substantial evidence to suggest that the Bon religion came from Persia.
