Coastal Virginia Flooding Duration Maps Current and Projected for 2020, 2050 and 2100

Abstract
Geospatial layers displaying annual flooding duration in the coastal zone of Virginia. These were generated from publicly available historical hourly tidal data from the NOAA Tides and Currents website from various tide gauges in the Chesapeake Bay region for the last 20 years. Particular tide gauges were linked to specific localities depending on location. The data was processed to determine average annual flooding duration at various flooding levels. Flood levels corresponding to specified average annual duration levels were then determined and used with lidar-derived digital elevation models to extract flood areas corresponding to the specified ranges of flood duration. Specifically, coastal flood areas corresponding to 0 - 5 hours, 5 - 100 hours, 100 - 200 hours, > 200 hours of annual flood duration were extracted. These time ranges are coded as 1, 2, 3, 4, respectively, in the flood duration rasters. In addition to present day flooding, projected flooding was considered for future years 2050, 2100 using the Intermediate-High scenario from the 2017 NOAA Technical Report. The values were adjusted for regional subsidence. Sea level rise values of 0.457 meters and 1.280 meters were used, respectively, for 2050 and 2100. These values were added to the water levels in the tidal data to derive new frequency flooding results for 2050 and 2100. Locality data is grouped into regions.
