Abstract
Why do we report literacy rates with GDP and infant mortality rates? Why is it so important that we have a literate nation? In this thesis, I examine the three case studies of the Spanish, Cuban, and Nicaraguan literacy movements. Then, I analyze the successes and shortcomings of each. From there, I define literacy in a larger context. Using this information, I propose a "health literacy campaign", which I believe will help the current state of literacy rates in the United States.
