Abstract
The potential responses of wetland vegetation on the Mattaponi River to the proposed withdrawal of freshwater and the resulting alteration in salinity patterns were studied by comparing existing plant community distributions (which were surveyed in the summer of 1990) and historical vegetation distributions (which were evaluated through the use of aerial photography from 1953, 1971, and 1987) with estimated salinity patterns (developed from historical and adjusted freshwater inflows using a simulation model developed previously at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science).
