Abstract
The wreck site of the famous Blackbeard’s Queen Anne’s Revenge is the focus of numerous archaeological and geologic studies. Since grounding in 1817, the wreck has settled by roughly 3 meters. Researchers at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science in Gloucester, VA are attempting to model modern scour activity while making predictions of the maximum depth of scour. This study will use 7 vibracores collected from around the site to analyze the geology underlying the wreck. Information gained from core analysis will be coupled with side scan sonar data to elaborate upon the present understanding of the geology at the site. Close observation will be given to grain size and sediment horizons. The results of this study may prove valuable to ongoing attempts to model the settling behavior of the wreck.
