Abstract
The purpose of my research was to determine the details of the sediment composition of the Eastover, Calvert, Old Church and Piney Point formations of the New Kent County area in Virginia and if there was any lateral variability in the sediment composition across the map area. Drill core samples were taken from auger boringsin two locations; near Quinton, Virginia and Tunstall, Virginia. The sediment of the four formations is composed of poorly sorted to very poorly sorted sand, large mud fractions and a fining seaward trend in grain size. The exceptions are the well sorted mud, mean is .49 phi in the upper part of the Calvert Formation and the slight fining landward of the Old Church Formation. The four formations in the study area are separated by distinguishable differences in mineral content except near formation boundaries where mixing may have occurred due to drilling, erosion and/or tectonic activity.
