Abstract
The James River flows from the Valley and Ridge of Virginia to the Coastal Plain. Five major knickpoints unrelated to lithology are located along this river from Lynchburg to the Fall Line at Richmond. In the Virginia Piedmont, several tributaries of the James River also contain knickpoints that are not related to lithologic changes along the channel. The knickpoints of the James River and the major tributaries can be attributed to base level change of the Atlantic Ocean. Knickpoint propagation along the James River causes knickpoint propagation of tributaries of the James River.
