Abstract
Deposits in the Lake Powell, Mill Creek basin, James City County, Virginia from the late Holocene to present have never been analyzed in stratigraphic sequence. In 1999 hurricane Floyd hit the Lake Powell drainage basin creating floodwaters that destroyed the lake Powell dam. This event sparked interest in the history of the basin from the creation of the valley at a sea level low stand (3000 ybp) up to its present man made status. Vibracore borings taken from the lake bed have revealed a sequence of sedimentary deposits that record a eustatic rise of 6 m. in sea level. From the base up, the stratigraphy fines upward from fluvial sands, to peat, to marsh silts and fine sands, and ending in very fine lake deposits.
