Abstract

This thesis explores images of Joan of Arc in French cinema, using two main criteria - gender performativity and agency. It links Joan's imagery in French film to concurrent events in society, and argues that Joan of Arc, as the quintessential French hero, represents what female heroism looks like at any point in time.
