Abstract
Excerpt from thesis: "The images recorded by a camera last long after photographer and subject are gone. Such is the case with photographer Albert Durant of Williamsburg, Virginia. When he passed away in 1990, the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation's Visual Resources Library purchased the Durant Collection from his second wife for a price of $10,000. His work represents a Williamsburg outside of the realm tri-cornered hats, restored buildings, and fifes and drums. It captures a thriving middle class African American community in the city during the 1940s and 1950s..."
