Abstract

This honors project is a series of expository and personal nonfiction essays. Baltimore City, the author's hometown, emerges as a protagonist in pieces ranging from the demise of Maryland horse racing to a father's music career, HIV among black men to a mother's hair salon. Throughout the collection, the author considers the personal and the public as she confronts themes of family, home, and belonging.
