Abstract
The 1980s in Germany ended in intense political and cultural upheaval. Yet for the majority of the decade, relations between East and West Germany were quite stable. Despite the ascension to power of a conservative West German party that had advocated isolating East Germany in the past, relations between the two states improved markedly during the 1980s. This thesis examines why this occurred, focusing mostly on the period from 1982 to 1987. In particular, questions of nuclear security, individual actions, and financial links are discussed in the context of explaining the German "Coalition of Reason" of the 1980s.
