Abstract
This thesis investigates the history of scholarship on the artist Thomas Eakins and attempts to present a new direction in our interpretations of his life and art. By investigating the peculiarities in his artwork this thesis shows that his art is, in part, a dark commentary on the social pressures of the Gilded Age.
